Match Game 10

Adolph Anderssen vs. Paul Morphy

Paris - July, 1858

A perverse thrill, to be sure, seeing Paul Morphy beaten by a move like 1. a3.

Anderssen played this move three times in his match with Morphy, breaking even with it. His idea was to play a reversed Sicilian Defense with an extra tempo, and try to keep the center lines blocked, hoping to take advantage of Morphy's difficulty with closed games.
