Abe Turner vs. Bobby Fischer

New York, 1956-1958

The only prominent American master to hold a winning record over Bobby Fischer was Abe Turner, who beat Fischer twice in 1956.

Their final encounter was in the last round of Fischer's first US Championship. Leading by a half point going into the final round, Fischer did something very uncharacteristic: took an 18 move Grandmaster Draw against Turner, and hoped that Reshevsky wouldn't be able to beat Lombardy (which he didn't).

Turner was murdered in 1964 by a fellow employee at Chess Review magazine, who went mad and imagined him a Communist spy.
