The defending champion, Stanley, was knocked out in the first round. To leave no doubt that America had a new champion, after the tournament Morphy challenged any member of the New York club to a match in which he would give odds of Pawn and Move. Stanley accepted the challenge, for $100 a side, in a match that would go to the first to win seven games. After drawing the first game and losing the next four, Stanley resigned the match. Not liking to take money for playing chess, Morphy sent the $100 to Stanley's wife, as Stanley himself would have just drunk it up. This may have something to do with why Stanley's daughter was later named "Pauline".
