Max Judd vs. Albert Hodges Match
1887
Max Judd, a Saint Louis judge, defeated future US Champion Albert
Beauregard Hodges in a match by a 5-2 score, and claimed the National
Title because of it. Since Captain Mackenzie (who had won three
National Congresses as well as beaten Judd in an 1880 match) was still
alive and active, no one took the claim seriously. However, see also
Judd's brushes with the title in
1890 and 1904.
