2. Reshevsky 0½ xx ½1 2-2

Byrne - ½ 1 - 1 ½ 3-1
Reshevsky ½ - 0 1 - ½ 2-2
Kavalek ½ ½ - 0 0 - 1-3

The playoff was necessary, since there was a three-way tie for first, but only two spots in the Interzonal were available. Byrne and Reshevsky, as the top two finishers in the playoff, played in the 1973 Interzonals.

  • As a result of this tournament, Robert Byrne qualified for the 1973 Leningrad Interzonal. Sammy Reshevsky qualified for the 1973 Petropolis Interzonal.

  • There were only two US Interzonal spots, rather than three, as in 1969, because the 1971 FIDE Congress at Vancouver, as part of a redistribution program, had removed one interzonal seat from each zone having more than one (Source: Chess Life & Review, 11/71).
