As a result of this tournament, Lubomir Kavalek and James
Tarjan qualified for the
1979 Interzonals.
Leonid Shamkovich and Edmar Mednis tied for the 3rd Interzonal
spot, and had a playoff which Shamkovich won.
However, Kavalek dropped out of the Interzonal, and his spot was
taken by Mednis.
Walter Browne was scheduled to play in this tournament,
but walked out just before the first round began, in a dispute
over tournament lighting.
