As a result of this tournament, Walter Browne and Yasser Seirawan qualified for the 1982 Interzonals.

Larry Christiansen, Lubosh Kavalek, and Sammy Reshevsky tied for the final Interzonal spot, and played off in Jacksonville:

With all the Playoff games drawn, Christiansen won the final spot, owing to better tiebreak points.

Larry Evans withdrew from the tournament after 2 rounds. Since he did not complete half his schedule, both of his completed games were anulled.

This was the final US Championship for 8-time Champion Sammy Reshevsky, and 5-time Champion Larry Evans.
