  • This was also a World Championship Zonal. As a result, Tal, Tukmakov, Savon, and Kuzmin qualified for the 1973 Interzonals. They were joined by Geller, Korchnoi and Taimanov (who were seeded by virtue of having played in the previous Candidates), and Karpov (who was seeded by virtue of having won the 1969 World Junior Championship). A special commission consisting of Botvinnik, Najdorf, Kashdan and Trifunovic selected Polugaevsky, Smyslov, Keres, and Stein to play in the Interzonal also. Stein passed away just before the tournament, and was replaced by Bronstein.
