  • As in several previous years, the Soviet Championship was not a Zonal this year. A Soviet Zonal was held in Lvov, from which Dreev, Yudasin, Khalifman, Shirov, and Lputian qualified. Gelfand, Ivanchuk, Dolmatov, Gurevich, and Tal were seeded by rating. Ehlvest, Sokolov, Vaganian, and Salov were seeded into the Candidates.
