1994 PCA Candidates Matches

CYCLE 1 and only: 8-Man Knockout
When Gary Kasparov and Nigel Short walked out of FIDE with the world title in 1993, they formed the PCA, or Professional Chess Association, to administer the title. They formed a system similar to the one that FIDE had used from 1965 to 1983. An Interzonal was held in Groningen, in which 8 qualifiers played in a 3 round series of knockout matches, with the winner challenging Kasparov for the World Title in 1996.

The PCA folded after this inaugural cycle, leading Kasparov to take the World Title elsewhere, after successfully defending it against the Candidates Winner, Anand.
