1997 Candidates Tournament
Groningen, Netherlands, 11-12/1997
For the final Cycle, FIDE abandoned the Interzonal/Candidates format, and combined the two events into one. The Candidates, as it had been since 1965 was a Knockout Event, but it was extended to a full 7 rounds, the 1st round being a Round of 128 (though not that many players actually participated, due to byes and seeding). Due to the sheer number of players, most of the rounds consisted of matches consisting of a mere 2 games, with Rapids games used to break all ties.
The winner of this tournament qualified to play a FIDE Championship match with Anatoly Karpov... one month later.

In the event of a tie match, there was a two game
Rapids Playoff. If the match was still tied after this,
an unlimited number of Sudden Death games
