  • Players marked in green qualified for the 1956 Candidates.

  • Smyslov, as the loser in the last World Championship was seeded into the 1956 Candidates.

  • Samuel Reshevsky and Larry Evans of the USA were eligible to play in this tournament, but withdrew, opting to play in the US Open instead.

  • In Prague the next year, Pachman and Ilivitsky played a match for the first reserve spot in the 1956 Candidates. 1 2 3 4 5 6 Ilivitsky ½ ½ ½ ½ ½ 1 3½ w-Pachman ½ ½ ½ ½ ½ 0 2½

  • One of the great collapses in Interzonal history was pulled off by Andrija Fuderer in this tournament. With a score of 7½-3½ after 12 rounds (with one Bye), he proceeded to go 1½-7½ the rest of the way, knocking himself well out of contention. A mere 3½-5½ score in that home stretch would have put him among the qualifiers. During the collapse, he lost to Szabo, Donner, Keres, Geller, Bronstein, and Pachman, drawing only with Petrosian, Spassky and Ilivitzky with White. After this failure, Fuderer left chess for a University career. Here is a record of his tale of woe in this tournament:
