  • Players in Green advanced to the 1962 Candidates Tournament.

  • Stein, Benko and Gligoric tied for 6th place and played off for the final spot in the Candidates:
               1 2 3
    Stein xx ½½ 11 3-1
    Benko ½½ xx 1- 2-1
    Gligoric 00 0- xx 0-3

Stein won the playoff, but was excluded by a rule passed in the 1959 FIDE Congress that limited the number of players from one country who could qualify to three. Since Petrosian, Geller, and Korchnoi had qualified ahead of him, Stein was excluded and his spot went to Benko.

  • Tal, as the loser of the last World Championship, and Keres, as the runner up in the previous Candidates, were seeded into the 1962 Candidates.

  • Uhlmann began the tournament with a 10-4 score, but collapsed near the end and failed to qualify.
