  • Players in Green advanced to the 1965 Candidates Matches.

  • Keres, as the runner-up in the previous Candidates, was seeded into the 1965 Candidates. Botvinnik, as the loser of the last World Championship should have been seeded into the 1965 Candidates, but declined to participate. His place was taken by Geller, who had finished third in the previous Candidates.

  • The 1959 ruling prohibiting more than 3 players from the same country from qualifying was still in effect. As a result, Stein (again!) and Bronstein were excluded from qualification.

  • With Stein and Bronstein out of the way, Portisch and Reshevsky tied for the final Candidates spot, and played off.
               1 2 3
    Portisch 1 ½ 1 2½
    Reshevsky 0 ½ 0 ½

Portisch beat Reshevsky 2½-½ in the playoff to take the last spot. Both Portisch wins were with the Black pieces.
