The highlight of this match is the biggest shock ending in the history of the Championship.
In Game 23, Tchigorin, a piece ahead, was on the verge of tying the score at 9-9 and sending the match into overtime.
Rather than sealing his move normally, he made it on the board, and, in so doing, un-protected his h Pawn,
allowing Steinitz a mate in 2 that ended the match.
The conditions of this match are still not clear to me.
Hanon Russell in an article at chesscafe.com states that the Match
was for 10 Wins, with an extension to 12 wins, in the event
that the score reached 9-9.
I.A. Horowitz, on the other hand, states that the match was Best
of 20, same as the 1889 match, and that when the score was tied at
10-10, both players agreed to extend it to 10 wins.
And a third source, that I can no longer find, claims that the
match was for 8 wins, but was extended to 10 wins, in the event of
a 7-7 tie.
