by Graeme Cree

The original Star Trek series had many regular characters, but some characters were not as regular as others (no pun intended).

When it came time to call the roll, some characters had better attendance records than others. Here are a set of Star Trek attendance charts, showing for each and every episode, who was present, and who was playing hooky that day.

(NOTE: Mr. Leslie, the Where's "Waldo" of Star Trek, has his own page elsewhere on this site).

VOICE ONLY APPEARANCES

(Instances where a regular character is heard in an episode, but never seen)

  • Lieutenant Uhura in The Enemy Within:  They say there are no small parts, only small actors. Uhura's role in this episode, puts this old saw to a stern test, as all she gets to do is say "Captain Kirk, I have a tie-in with Sulu now," over the intercom. In the few bridges scenes in this episode, an unnamed Gold Shirt is sitting at the Communications Station.

  • Scotty in The Man Trap:  When Darnell dies, Ensign Noname answers Kirk's communicator call. When Kirk requests beam-up, Scotty's voice answers saying "Locked onto you, Captain." This is the entire extent of Scotty's involvement with the episode, and he isn't listed in the credits.

  • Sulu in Charlie X:  Sulu speaks precisely two words in this episode:  "Bridge" and "Affirmative", when Kirk activates the intercom, to request that two Security goons be sent to the gym.

  • Lieutenant Uhura in The Menagerie, Part 2:  She's heard over the intercom, and reads the message from Starfleet at the end, but is never actually seen.

  • Scotty in All Our Yesterdays:  He speaks to Kirk via communicator several times throughout the episode, but is never seen. In fact, the interior of the Enterprise is never seen in this episode at all. This is the only episode where that's the case. Even in Plato's Stepchildren and Requiem for Methuselah (two other episodes that take place almost entirely away from the ship), the interior of the ship is seen briefly.

    NON SPEAKING ROLES

(Instances where a regular character appears on camera, but has no lines)

  • Yeoman Rand in The Conscience of the King:  Her entire role in the episode consists of walking out of the turbolift and glaring momentarily at Lenore Karidian (Kirk's Catch of the Week) before walking away.

  • Lieutenant Uhura in The Paradise Syndrome:  She's there on the bridge, for a reaction shot or two, courtesy of stock footage, but a male redshirt is at her station in all the long shots.
