  • Bobby Fischer, William Lombardy and Raymond Weinstein qualified for the 1961 Interzonal. However, the 1961 Interzonal was delayed until 1962, by which time Weinstein had exams, Lombardy had joined the priesthood, and neither could take the time to play.

  • When Lombardy and Weinstein dropped out, their two spots went to the three 4th place finishers, who, in Sonnenborn tiebreak order, were Reshevsky, Bisguier, and Sherwin. Reshevsky declined to play in the Interzonal, giving the spots to Bisguier and Sherwin.

  • "The USA will be represented by Robert J. Fischer who won the U.S. Championship, Rosenwald Trophy and Zonal Tournament of 1960 and by Arthur B. Bisguier and James T. Sherwin who tied with Sammy Reshevsky for fourth. (Second and third place winners Bill Lombardy and Raymond Weinstein find that play will interfere with their studies, and Reshevsky has declined to play.)" -- Chess Review, February 1962, p. 35.

  • Although he'd planned to play, Sherwin was unable to get the time off from his job, forcing him to drop out as well. Benko re-replaced Sherwin, although why this happened is unclear. After Sherwin dropped out, Charles Kalme should have been the next in line. Assuming that Kalme also declined, the spot would then have gone to one of the 8th - 11th place finishers. Although Byrne had the best Sonnenborn tiebreaks, the spot went to Benko instead. Perhaps Byrne, Berliner and Saidy all declined, giving it to Benko. When someone who ties for 11th ends up getting an Interzonal spot, it's officially The Spot That Nobody Wanted.

  • "The contenders in this interzonal qualifying tournament all emerged from zonal tournaments.... The three from the USA, Robert J. Fischer, Pal Benko and Arthur Bisguier from the U.S. Championship of 1960-1 (Bisguier as reported page 35, February, moved up as Bill Lombardy and Raymond Weinstein could not play, and Benko re-replaced James Sherwin who discovered his job did not permit so much time off after all)." -- Chess Review, April 1962, p. 104.
