  • As a result of this tournament, Bobby Fischer, and Arthur Bisguier qualified for the 1964 Amsterdam Interzonal.

  • Sammy Reshevsky, Larry Evans, and William Addison finished in a 3-way tie for the final Interzonal spot and played off with Reshevsky winning it:

  • Coverage in the December 1962 and January 1963 issues of Chess Life.

  • Fischer's 1st round loss to Mednis was his first defeat in 47 US Championship games.

  • Former champions Fischer, Reshevsky, and Evans all lost in Round 1.

  • The tournament was played at the Henry Hudson Hotel in New York. A newspaper strike during the tournament may have reduced the number of spectators present.

  • Rossolimo had wanted to withdraw from the tournament after a bad blunder to Bisguier in Round 4, but was persuaded to stay, and finished the tournament with no further defeats.

  • After a first round win, Byrne drew his next 10 games, missing out on the Interzonal, but going through two consecutive US Championships undefeated. I once ran all of Byrne's games from this tournament through Stockfish, which said he'd played at about 92% accuracy.
