  • With his victory here, Smyslov advanced to challenge Botvinnik for the World Championship in 1957.

  • The 1953 Candidates had been extremely expensive. As a result, it was decided to cut the number of participants to 7.

  • Due to criticism that Smyslov was not included, even though he'd challenged for the title in the previous match, he was added, to bring the total to 8.

  • Since 7th place in the Interzonal resulted in a three-way tie between Filip, Pilnik and Spassky, all three were included, bringing the total up to 10.
