With his victory here, Smyslov advanced to challenge Botvinnik
for the World Championship in 1957.
The 1953 Candidates had been extremely expensive. As a result, it
was decided to cut the number of participants to 7.
Due to criticism that Smyslov was not included, even though he'd
challenged for the title in the previous match, he was added, to
bring the total to 8.
Since 7th place in the Interzonal resulted in a three-way tie
between Filip, Pilnik and Spassky, all three were included, bringing
the total up to 10.
