On Omega they came upon an execution in progress.

U.S.S. Exeter's transporter coordinates were locked on an Omegan village. Kirk, Spock, Dr. McCoy, and Raintree inspected the townsite after "beaming" into Omega. It seemed the "Old West" had come alive again - in this frontier settlement. The natives, however, were Oriental in appearance. Kirk's party arrived in time to witness a public execution. A white fur-clad savage knelt, waiting the fall of a headsman's ax - while a female of his tribe struggled with her captors. The crew, accustomed to swift change in time and place, saw violence - in any form - as man's enemy.

NOTES:

  • Again, this picture is pretty darn close to the one that Viewmaster made.

  • Since Star Trek was pitched to the networks as a kind of "Wagon Train to the stars", no opportunity to compare it to a Western can be passed over.

  • Note the quotations marks around "beaming" and "Old West". You have to wonder what the point of this is. To me it seems almost as silly as putting "™" after every proper name (which amazingly they DON'T do here, though there are other Trek publications that have).
